Here are some of our most frequently asked questions:

How does laser hair reduction work?

A concentrated beam of light is aimed at hair. The light is absorbed by the pigment, which damages the follicle enough to retard future growth. Lasers can remove hair on almost any body part, from several months to years, as the results differ widely from person to person.

What determines who is a good candidate for laser hair reduction?

Just about anyone is a good candidate for laser hair reduction.  With the latest technology in the diode laser system, we can safely and effectively treat almost every skin type.   The “best” candidate for laser hair reduction is someone who has fair skin and dark hair.  Please keep in mind that the laser is not as effective on blonde, red, grey or white hair, as well as “peach fuzz”.

How many treatments will I need?

If you’ve never had any laser treatments, we will recommend you start with a package of 6.  It typically will require 6 – 8 treatments to permanently reduce the number of regrowing hairs by more than 90%, six months after the last treatment.  Some body areas may require even more sessions, and some may require less.  Most people will come in for a “touch up” appointment 1-2 times per year.

How long does it last?

There are a number of factors that can affect the success of a series of hair reduction treatments.  After each treatment, you’ll see a noticeable, permanent reduction in the number of hairs that regrow in the treatment area. Hormones also play a big factor in how “permanent” results can be.  Hormones are one of the biggest triggers of hair growth, so keep in mind, you may notice some regrowth after pregnancy, during menopause, during stress and often with significant medication changes.

Does the laser treatment hurt?

Most people leave our office saying “Whew! That was way easier than I had expected!”  On our laser, we have a “chill tip” which greatly reduces any discomfort.  It is often described as feeling similar to tweezing.

How do I prepare for my treatment?

  • You cannot wax or pluck for 2 weeks prior to the appointment.
  • Please come in FRESHLY SHAVED. It is best if you shave either the morning of your appointment or the night before.
  • Please fill out the 4 forms located under the “new clients” tab above.  If you’re not able to fill these our ahead of time, please arrive to your appt 15 minutes early to fill them out in office.
  • You want to avoid direct sun exposure in the treatment area for 2 weeks prior to your appointment. If you happen to get a sunburn, you want to wait one week after the burn fully heals before doing laser.
  • Please have a full list of any medications you are taking.  Some medications, such as acne medications and antibiotics, can cause photosensitivity and laser should be avoided. ALWAYS let your technician know of any medication changes.

Is there downtime?

No! Luckily laser hair removal generally does not require any downtime.  You may be a little pink or swollen immediately after your appointment, but that usually subsides within a few minutes. Many of our clients are able to stop in on their lunch hour and head back to work right after their treatment.

What do I do after my treatment?

To avoid possible side effects after laser hair removal, here is what we recommend:

  • Avoid direct sunlight from hitting the treatment area, including tanning beds.
  • No heavy exercise, hot tubs or saunas for 24 hours, or until any redness and swelling has subsided. Often it has subsided within a few minutes of the appointment.
  • Apply a cool compress if you have redness, swelling or discomfort.
  • If irritation or itching occurs, hydrocortisone cream and aloe are both safe to use.

What are the possible side effects of laser hair removal?

The most common side effects are minor and can last a few minutes to a few days. These side effects are:

  • Redness
  • Swelling/Edema
  • Discomfort/Itching

Other possible side effects which are rare, but still possible, are:

  • Blistering
  • Infections
  • Scarring
  • Skin lightening or darkening

In time, the skin color does tend to return to normal, however some are permanent.  It is very important to always be honest with your technician about medication changes and sun exposure.  Following the before and after care instructions are also crucial in minimizing the risk of these possible side effects.
